US-based OpenAI reported on Friday that India’s utilization of ChatGPT for technical purposes exceeds global averages, with data analysis levels about four times higher than the global norm and Codex usage for coding nearly three times more. Indian users pose almost three times as many coding queries and about double the number of inquiries related to education and learning compared to the global median. The adoption of AI in India stands at around 35%, surpassing the global average of approximately 30%.
At workplaces, AI is predominantly used for drafting and editing, technical support and debugging, and streamlining workflows. Beyond work settings, roughly 35% of messages focus on practical advice, while around 20% each are dedicated to general information and writing tasks, indicating an increasing trend in utilizing AI for learning, decision-making, and personal productivity. Ronnie Chatterji, Chief Economist at OpenAI, emphasized the need to ground India’s AI discussions in factual evidence rather than hype, stating, “AI adoption is outpacing our measurement capabilities, presenting a challenge for informed decision-making.”
The study revealed that AI adoption is more prevalent among younger users, with 18-24-year-olds accounting for just under half of all messages and 18-34-year-olds contributing to about 80% of consumer messages. These usage patterns indicate that Indian users are not only adopting AI on a large scale but also engaging in relatively advanced usage, particularly in coding- and analysis-related workflows. Geographically, the highest utilization of coding capabilities is observed in India’s key technology hubs, with Telangana leading the pack, followed by Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, respectively.
In India, ChatGPT has exceeded 100 million weekly active users, positioning India as the largest market outside the US and the fastest-growing market for Codex.
