India is gearing up to increase its power generation capacity to 300 gigawatts in the upcoming year to meet the surging demand for electricity driven by data centers, electric vehicles, and artificial intelligence. Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar highlighted this initiative during the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference in Vadodara. He emphasized the importance of a reliable power supply for sustaining a robust economy, acknowledging Gujarat’s significant contributions to this endeavor.

The minister underscored the critical role of electricity in various sectors such as industries, MSMEs, data centers, metro rail systems, hospitals, and emerging technologies. He noted a substantial rise in electricity demand during the summer, with India experiencing its highest-ever peak demand. India successfully met this demand, with a prepared capacity of up to 284 gigawatts to prevent any shortages.

Manohar Lal projected a continuous increase in electricity demand due to the expansion of India’s digital economy and clean mobility ecosystem. Anticipating a rise of 30 gigawatts in demand because of data centers, electric vehicles, and artificial intelligence, the country has already readied a capacity of 300 gigawatts for the forthcoming year. He attributed this achievement to long-term planning and reforms implemented under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership in the past 12 years.

India’s electricity sector has witnessed significant transformation since 2014, with the installed power generation capacity escalating from 249 gigawatts to 542 gigawatts presently. This growth has enabled the country to meet escalating demand while supporting industrial expansion. The government’s reforms have also focused on enhancing electricity access, with schemes like ‘Saubhagya’ and ‘PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana’ facilitating electricity connections for millions of households.
