India has expressed worry over the United Nations’ inability to reform the Security Council, leading to a decline in public trust in the organization. The country’s Permanent Representative, P Harish, highlighted that the Security Council’s inefficacy in resolving conflicts has contributed to a negative shift in how people perceive the UN.
Speaking at a ministerial roundtable focused on enhancing multilateralism for the future, Harish emphasized that the current UN framework, established 80 years ago post-World War II, is inadequate for addressing modern global challenges. Despite efforts, the UN collective has struggled to make substantial progress in reforming the Security Council.
Harish underscored the need for concrete actions to address the Council’s limitations and enhance its effectiveness in promoting international peace and security. He also stressed the importance of revitalizing the General Assembly and empowering the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) to drive sustainable development across economic, social, and environmental dimensions.
In addition to advocating for Council reform, Harish highlighted the significance of supporting economic growth in developing regions. He reiterated India’s commitment to inclusive development, resource mobilization, and setting a positive example for global cooperation. Harish also called for international financial institutions to evolve towards greater representation, responsiveness, and development-oriented approaches to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals.
