India is ranked fourth globally in public confidence regarding the country’s direction, with 81% of respondents showing optimism, compared to the 48% global average. A report by SEC Newgate, a global strategic communications, advocacy, and research group, highlighted that India places high importance on responsible business and ESG practices, with 89% of respondents considering it crucial, surpassing the global average of 80%. The study, conducted ahead of the World Economic Forum in Davos, surveyed over 20,000 individuals across 20 countries and territories, emphasizing a persistent confidence gap as communities assess organizations based on their real-world impacts.
The report, which includes India for the first time, reveals that the Indian market not only mirrors key global trends but often surpasses global averages in awareness, understanding, and interest in impact consciousness. Indian communities exhibit strong expectations for responsible business behavior, local economic contributions, and values-driven leadership, positioning the country among the most optimistic markets globally. The research underscores a significant challenge for global businesses, as communities worldwide expect companies to engage, but the issues deemed important and credible stances vary widely by market, necessitating a nuanced approach to managing global reputation.
According to the report, corporate reputation has evolved significantly, with a growing emphasis on the real impact delivered by companies, particularly within communities near their operations. Fiorenzo Tagliabue, Group CEO of SEC Newgate, highlighted the importance of understanding local expectations and navigating differing market dynamics to maintain credibility and permission to operate globally. Dilip Yadav, Member of SEC Newgate’s Global Corporate & Geopolitical Advisory Council, emphasized India’s unique position, noting the public’s high engagement, optimism, and impact-consciousness, which demand organizations to actively contribute to national progress through credible climate action and clear communication of values.
