India has been ranked fourth globally in public confidence, with 81 percent of the population expressing optimism, compared to a 48 percent global average, according to a report. The report from SEC Newgate highlighted that India places high importance on socially responsible businesses, with 89 percent of respondents emphasizing this aspect, exceeding the global average of 80 percent. There is a noticeable gap between the expectation of responsible behavior from organizations, with 89 percent expecting it, and the visible performance, which stands at 78 percent.
India has secured the third position globally in terms of the community’s expectations from businesses to communicate their values and take a stand on social issues. The report, based on a survey conducted across 20 countries with 20,000 participants, revealed strong support for enhanced climate ambition, with 85 percent of respondents believing that businesses should address environmental concerns. However, the public’s acceptance is also influenced by affordability pressures, with fewer respondents prioritizing climate action over business profitability (69 percent), consumer cost reduction (62 percent), or employee pay and benefits increase (57 percent).
In India, familiarity with the term ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) is relatively high, with 81 percent of individuals aware of the term and 47 percent claiming a strong understanding, as per the report. Notably, 61 percent of Indian respondents exhibit a keen interest in ESG issues once explained, a significantly higher figure compared to the global rating of 35 percent. The Indian community also displays strong support for businesses that invest in local communities, domestic employment, and responsible sourcing.
Dilip Yadav, Founding Partner at First Partners and Member of SEC Newgate’s Global Corporate & Geopolitical Advisory Council, commented on India’s results, stating that the data reflects a highly engaged, optimistic, and impact-conscious public that expects organizations to actively contribute to national progress. He emphasized that India’s reputation is built on local contributions, credible climate initiatives, and transparent communication of values, making it a challenging yet rewarding business environment.
