India reiterated its backing for balanced, rules-based, and transparent World Trade Organisation (WTO) reforms during its 8th Trade Policy Review (TPR) in Geneva. Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agarwal highlighted India’s robust economic performance, citing an average annual growth of nearly 8% despite global challenges. He noted that India’s exports hit a record $863.1 billion in 2025-26, underscoring efforts to boost prosperity amid global uncertainties.

The Trade Policy Review meeting at the WTO allowed members to evaluate India’s trade policies from January 1, 2021, to December 31, 2025. Agarwal outlined key reforms like the Jan Vishwas Initiative, digital customs, and quality infrastructure aimed at fostering inclusive development and enhancing trade facilitation. Ambassador Nelle Pepe Tavita Levy, Chair of the Trade Policy Review Body (TPRB), commended India’s rapid economic growth and its focus on becoming a leading economy by 2047.

Levy praised India’s strides in digital services exports and financial inclusion through Digital Public Infrastructure reforms. She also lauded India’s acceptance of the WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies and its transparent responses during the review process. Various WTO members highlighted India’s constructive role in the multilateral trading system, emphasizing its achievements in areas like innovation, trade facilitation, and integration of MSMEs into global value chains.
