On World Environment Day, India organized a special event at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) Trade and Environment Week 2026 in Geneva. The event, titled “Showcase of India’s Carbon Credit Trading Scheme and Standardisation in Renewable Energy,” highlighted India’s commitment to sustainable development and clean energy transition. Various key policy and regulatory initiatives supporting India’s shift to a low-carbon economy were presented by experts and senior officials from different ministries.
The session emphasized India’s progress in achieving its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement. It also focused on showcasing India’s achievements in carbon market mechanisms, environmental sustainability, and climate change initiatives. The country’s efforts in promoting multilateral cooperation and following principles like Common but Differentiated Responsibilities and Respective Capabilities (CBDR-RC) were underscored.
India has been exceeding its climate commitments ahead of schedule. By March 2026, the share of non-fossil fuel-based installed electricity generation capacity had surpassed the 50% target for 2030. Similarly, India’s emissions intensity of GDP had decreased by 37.38% between 2005 and 2022, exceeding the NDC target well before the set timeline. The event also shed light on India’s evolving carbon market architecture and initiatives to set standards in renewable energy sectors.
The presentation discussed India’s national framework for the Indian Carbon Market, focusing on the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS). This framework aims to establish a national electronic carbon credit trading platform to incentivize activities that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, progress under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, including emission thresholds and technical criteria for “Green Hydrogen,” was highlighted. The event provided a platform for India to share its experiences and policy approaches on trade, environmental sustainability, and carbon markets at the international level.
