India is gearing up to celebrate Commonwealth Games Day with a massive fitness and sports event on May 24. This event marks the 75th edition of the Fit India Movement’s ‘Sundays on Cycle’ campaign, set to take place at over 8,000 locations nationwide. The celebration aims to honor India’s sports aspirations leading up to the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad.
The event will bring together athletes, coaches, fitness enthusiasts, youth volunteers, and citizens in one of the country’s largest community-driven sporting events. Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, along with Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi, will lead the celebrations from Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Riverfront. The theme for the Ahmedabad event is “A New Icon for a Fitter India – Pedalling to 2030,” expecting a significant turnout of cyclists and sports enthusiasts.
The celebrations are in anticipation of India hosting the 100th edition of the Commonwealth Games in 2030. Mandaviya emphasized the importance of creating awareness and fostering a sports culture among the youth. Actor Ayushmann Khurrana will be part of the Ahmedabad event, joining Commonwealth Games and Olympic medalists like hockey players Rajani Etimarpu, Gurjit Kaur, and Sonika Tandi, shooters Ankur Mittal and Anjum Moudgil, and badminton player Trupti Murgunde.
The nationwide celebrations will extend to all States and Union Territories, featuring Commonwealth Games-themed cycling drives and fitness events. Various dignitaries, including Union Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports Raksha Khadse and former wrestler Babita Phogat, will attend events in different locations. The 75th edition aims to showcase India’s emergence as a global sporting force and highlight its progress in sports infrastructure and talent development over the past decade.
