India will host the 11th BRICS Energy Ministers’ Meeting in Gurugram, starting Thursday. The meeting aims to enhance cooperation among BRICS member countries on energy security, sustainability, and innovation. Under its BRICS Chairship 2026, India’s theme is ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation, and Sustainability (BRICS)’.
BRICS includes Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, and the United Arab Emirates. Together, these countries represent nearly half of the world’s population and around 40% of global GDP. The meeting is crucial as nations worldwide strive to balance energy security, affordability, and sustainability amid challenges like climate change and technological advancements.
India’s sustainable development pathway aligns with the priorities of the BRICS Energy Agenda. The country focuses on meeting its increasing energy demand while ensuring energy security, access, and grid resilience. India aims to diversify its energy sources and boost the share of clean energy in its energy mix. As the world’s third-largest producer and consumer of electricity, India considers secure, affordable, and sustainable energy vital for its Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.
India has made significant progress in building a sustainable energy system. Over the past decade, the country has expanded its solar power capacity, deployed smart meters, and set ambitious energy storage targets. India has also improved its power transmission and distribution infrastructure, facilitating the integration of renewable energy. Notable advancements in the biofuels sector, such as ethanol blending and the introduction of E85 fuel, highlight India’s commitment to clean energy.
