India, US Advance Talks on Bilateral Trade Agreement

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced that India and the United States are in advanced discussions regarding a bilateral trade agreement. India has already finalized free trade agreements with Australia, the UK, and New Zealand, members of the Five Eyes (FVEY) intelligence alliance. Plans are underway to re-engage with Canada for a bilateral trade pact. The ongoing talks reflect India’s increasing strategic importance globally.
Recent discussions between Indian officials and a US delegation led by Deputy Trade Representative Rick Switzer in Delhi have been positive. Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal mentioned that India is close to finalizing an initial framework deal with the US to reduce reciprocal tariffs. Both countries have completed six rounds of talks covering a Bilateral Trade Agreement and an interim arrangement to lower tariffs.
There is an expectation of reaching an interim agreement to reduce tariffs on most Indian exports. While progress in the trade talks is noted, Minister Goyal emphasized that there is no fixed deadline for signing a deal. Both sides aim for a mutually beneficial agreement without rushing into decisions.
US President Donald Trump expressed optimism about the trade discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, hinting at a potential visit to Delhi in the coming year. Trump indicated a willingness to lower tariffs on Indian goods. However, India remains firm on safeguarding the interests of farmers, the dairy sector, and workers in trade agreements.
India has taken steps to balance its trade surplus with the US by increasing oil and gas imports. Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri announced a significant contract to import LPG from the US Gulf Coast, marking a historic development in India-US trade relations.
