External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized India’s right to self-defense and its determination to counter terrorism threats independently. Speaking at the Shaastra 2026- IIT Madras Techno-Entertainment fest in Chennai, he stated that India will take necessary actions to safeguard its citizens. Jaishankar indirectly criticized Pakistan, highlighting that cross-border terrorism hampers cooperation and goodwill, affecting agreements like water-sharing arrangements.
Jaishankar, addressing students and faculty at IIT Madras, discussed topics such as democracy, diplomacy, and India’s global role. He portrayed India as a nation balancing ancient wisdom with modern challenges. The Minister outlined India’s unique journey as a civilisational power, shaping a modern, multi-polar world. He underlined that India’s foreign policy is deeply rooted in its history, values, and cultural confidence, while adapting to contemporary global dynamics.
Highlighting India’s historical continuity, Jaishankar noted the country’s transition from an ancient civilization to a modern democratic state. He emphasized that India’s democratic model, adopted at Independence, transformed into a universal concept, reflecting the nation’s cultural and social diversity. The Minister stressed the significance of transparent communication in diplomacy, promoting mutual respect and understanding among nations on the global platform.
Reflecting on global challenges, Jaishankar commended India’s humanitarian efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic. He lauded India’s vaccine assistance to other countries as a substantial global contribution, showcasing the nation’s commitment to international stability. Jaishankar urged the academic community to uphold a global perspective while staying rooted in Indian values.
