A special Indian Air Force aircraft brought eight cheetahs from Botswana to Gwalior airport, where they were then flown to Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. The cheetahs will undergo quarantine and health monitoring before being released into the wild as part of ‘Project Cheetah.’
Union Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav is set to release the cheetahs at Kuno National Park, where they will be closely observed by officials to ensure their successful adaptation to the environment.
The arrival of these cheetahs marks a significant step in the government’s cheetah reintroduction program, increasing the total number of big cats in India to 47, including cubs born at the park since the initiative began in 2022.
A team of experts from Botswana has joined local officials at Kuno National Park to support the project, emphasizing the collaborative effort to establish a genetically diverse cheetah population in India over the next decade.
