The Indian Ambassador to Germany, Ajit Gupte, along with Dirk Wiese, Member of the Bundestag and Vice Chairman of the India-Germany Parliamentary Friendship Group, engaged in talks to enhance the multifaceted Strategic Partnership. Ambassador Ajit Gupte met with Mr. Dirk Wiese on July 10, 2026, to deliberate on bolstering the India-Germany Strategic Partnership, fostering Parliamentary exchanges, and boosting cooperation between Indian States and German Landers.
In another meeting, the Ambassador also held discussions with Bundestag Member and Transatlantic Coordinator Metin Hakverdi to explore avenues for deepening the India-Germany Strategic Partnership by leveraging opportunities arising from the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The meeting, which took place on July 9, 2026, focused on enhancing defense and security cooperation, as well as addressing global and regional issues.
Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during the Group of Seven (G7) Summit in Evian, France, to deliberate on further enhancing bilateral cooperation. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reported that both leaders assessed the progress in bilateral engagements and expressed contentment with the revitalized momentum in the India-Germany Strategic Partnership post Merz’s visit to India and the conclusion of the India-European Union (EU) Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations earlier this year.
As India and Germany commemorate the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic ties in 2026, PM Modi and Chancellor Merz reiterated their dedication to strengthening cooperation across various sectors, encompassing trade and investment, defense and security, green and sustainable development, technology, innovation, education, and mobility. This marked their second meeting in the year, during which they welcomed the signing of the Defence Industrial Cooperation Roadmap and the implementation of the transit visa waiver for Indian nationals transiting through Germany.
Chancellor Merz extended an invitation to the Prime Minister for the 8th India-Germany Inter-Governmental Consultations (IGC) slated to take place later this year in Germany.
