Indian-American Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi has called on President Donald Trump to reveal any financial ties with China involving himself, his family, or senior administration officials during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Krishnamoorthi emphasized the importance of ensuring that US policy towards China is guided by national interests rather than personal business motives.
Krishnamoorthi expressed concerns about Trump’s business interests and potential connections with Chinese authorities. He highlighted the lack of divestment from Trump’s multi-billion-dollar businesses and raised questions about possible profit-making opportunities for Trump’s family through deals related to their businesses.
Referring to a Democratic staff report, Krishnamoorthi mentioned that entities associated with the Chinese government had spent over $5.5 million at Trump-owned properties. He also pointed out reports of Trump-affiliated businesses receiving trademarks and approvals from Chinese authorities while he was in office. The Congressman stressed the need for transparency to uphold public trust and ensure that US-China policy decisions are solely based on America’s national interests.
Krishnamoorthi specifically requested Trump to disclose any recent business dealings, investments, trademarks, or licensing agreements in China involving himself, his family, the Trump Organization, or related entities. He sought information on pending or approved trademarks, permits, or regulatory approvals granted by Chinese authorities to Trump-affiliated entities, as well as any financial interests held by senior administration officials or immediate family members that could pose conflicts of interest regarding China policy.
The issue of foreign business ties and potential conflicts of interest has been a recurring concern for Trump, particularly related to the Trump Organization’s international business activities. Questions have been raised by Congressional Democrats and ethics watchdogs regarding the possibility of foreign governments influencing US policies through business transactions associated with Trump-owned properties and brands.
