Indian archery pioneer Shyam Lal Meena, a member of India’s inaugural Olympic archery team at the 1988 Seoul Games, has died at the age of 61 after battling liver-related issues. Meena, born in Rajasthan in 1965, overcame financial challenges to excel in archery, eventually winning bronze at the 1987 Asian Archery Championships, a milestone for Indian archery.
Meena’s participation in the 1987 championships alongside Limba Ram and Rajat Haldar led to India’s qualification for the 1988 Seoul Olympics, marking the country’s debut in Olympic archery. Despite finishing 71st in the individual qualification round at the Olympics, Meena’s contribution to Indian sports was recognized with the prestigious Arjuna Award in 1989.
After retiring from competitive archery, Meena continued to serve the sport as a coach in Banswara, nurturing young talent and promoting archery at the grassroots level in Rajasthan. His journey from a humble village to a pioneering figure in Indian archery remains a source of inspiration for aspiring athletes.
