Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi highlighted the crucial role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in modern warfare, citing its necessity for swift decision-making and efficient management of complex military operations. Speaking after overseeing the Passing Out Parade of the 150th Course at the National Defence Academy in Pune, General Dwivedi emphasized that AI-driven systems are essential due to the vast information and resources involved in contemporary battlefields. He explained that in today’s fast-paced warfare scenarios, rapid information processing and timely decision-making are paramount.
AI technologies, such as Small Language Models (SLMs) and Large Language Models (LLMs), are increasingly aiding military units in processing information effectively, optimizing resources, and enhancing operational efficiency in intricate environments. General Dwivedi underscored the significance of making quick and well-informed decisions in modern conflicts, where situations evolve rapidly and demand simultaneous actions across various domains. He pointed out that the use of SLMs and LLMs accelerates the decision-making process, facilitating resource rationalization and application in the current dynamic landscape.
Furthermore, General Dwivedi highlighted the rising importance of drones in military operations and stressed the need for armed forces to develop offensive and defensive capabilities to counter emerging aerial threats. With the proliferation of drones and other technological assets on the battlefield, commanders face the challenge of managing a vast array of resources in real-time. Automation, particularly through AI, is crucial for handling this complex ecosystem efficiently, enabling smoother execution of future military endeavors.
