The Indian Army has initiated ‘Operation Jal Rahat’ to assist the Assam government in extensive rescue and relief efforts due to ongoing floods in eastern Assam. This operation aims to support thousands of individuals affected by the floods across seven districts. Army and Assam Rifles units are actively present in severely impacted areas like Charaideo, Sivasagar, and Jorhat, where villages are cut off and normal life disrupted by floodwaters.
The Indian Air Force is on standby for potential aerial assistance if the situation worsens further. Collaborating with civil authorities and disaster response agencies, Army personnel have rescued stranded residents and are actively involved in evacuation and relief operations.
Floods have also damaged transportation infrastructure, affecting railway services and causing disruptions in road connectivity, particularly in low-lying regions. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has assigned state ministers to oversee rescue operations and evaluate the ground situation in the affected districts.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority reported a significant deterioration in the flood situation, resulting in one casualty in Sivasagar district, bringing the total flood-related deaths in the state this year to five. Over 57,100 individuals have been affected across several districts, a notable increase from the previous day’s count. Charaideo district is the most severely impacted, with nearly 24,000 affected individuals, followed by Dhemaji and Dibrugarh. Rescue teams are actively engaged in evacuation and relief operations, closely monitoring the flood situation amid forecasts of additional rainfall in the region.
