The Indian Army’s Trishakti Corps has constructed a 34-metre footbridge across the Balason River at Dudhia, linking Siliguri and Mirik in North Bengal. This initiative came after the previous bridge was washed away due to heavy rainfall, causing a disruption in the area. The new footbridge has reestablished pedestrian movement and connectivity, benefiting local residents, commuters, and tourists.
The temporary bridge not only addresses the transportation challenges caused by the damaged structure but also reopens access to crucial border crossing points like Pashupati Phatak. By swiftly responding to the district administration’s request, the Army has facilitated daily travel and essential activities for the people dependent on this route. Additionally, plans are underway to construct a wider Bailey Bridge at the same location to enhance vehicular movement between Siliguri and Mirik.
Efforts to restore vehicular traffic are expected to boost tourism in the region, which is a significant source of livelihood for many locals. The Army’s collaboration with the civil administration and local communities underscores the importance of coordinated responses in emergency situations and the restoration of essential infrastructure post natural disasters.
