Over 200 individuals, including veterans and local residents from remote areas of Kutch district, had their vision restored after a three-day surgical eye camp organized by the Indian Army at the Military Hospital in Bhuj, Gujarat. The camp, held in collaboration with a specialized ophthalmology team from the Army Hospital in New Delhi, also conducted comprehensive eye screenings for more than 2,500 patients. Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Command, visited the camp and praised the medical teams for their dedication and professionalism.

Brigadier Sanjay Kumar Mishra, Consultant and Head of Department (Ophthalmology), led the specialist surgical team credited with over 1 lakh successful surgical procedures. The camp focused on advanced cataract surgeries that helped patients from remote villages in Kutch regain their sight, while also facilitating early detection and treatment of other eye-related conditions through ophthalmic screenings. The initiative was part of the Army’s ongoing efforts to provide healthcare in border regions, emphasizing its commitment to the welfare of veterans and community health in strategically important areas.

The Army’s outreach in border regions aims to bridge the gap in healthcare services for remote populations by offering advanced diagnostic and surgical facilities. Lt Gen Seth emphasized the significance of such programs in building stronger ties with border communities, stating that the Indian Army will continue its medical and welfare initiatives to support veterans and civilians, strengthening bonds with the people in these regions. Rooted in the principle of “Service Before Self,” the Indian Army’s endeavors extend beyond defense duties to promote inclusive development and accessible healthcare in frontier districts.

The surgical eye camp in Kutch exemplifies the Army’s dedication to providing expert medical care and reaching out to populations that often lack access to quality health services. By restoring vision and ensuring early diagnosis for thousands, the camp has made a lasting impact on the residents’ lives, showcasing the Army’s role as a significant contributor to community welfare alongside its defense responsibilities.
