The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has adjusted the Indian Athletics Series calendar to offer more chances to talented athletes before the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. AFI President Bahadur Singh Sagoo revealed the updated schedule, emphasizing the focus on athletes who narrowly missed qualifying for these major events.
Sagoo highlighted that although the dates have been altered, the competition venues will remain unchanged. Notably, the 13th leg of the series has been rescheduled to August 18 from August 14, with subsequent legs also seeing date adjustments for better athlete participation.
Moreover, the season-ending event will now occur on September 10 instead of September 12 as initially planned. This final leg will serve as an invitation-based competition, with athletes selected based on their rankings in respective events, especially those gearing up for the Japan Asian Games.
The Indian Athletics Series has emerged as a crucial platform for domestic athletes to showcase their skills on home turf regularly. Sagoo expressed satisfaction with the past response to the series, emphasizing its significance in providing athletes with valuable competitive opportunities within the country.
Preceding these calendar changes, the 65th National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships took place successfully in Bhubaneswar from June 24 to 28. Concurrently, preparations for the international season are in full swing, with the first batch of Indian athletes departing for Europe to refine their readiness for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, commencing on July 23.
