A 56-member Indian boxing team is ready to kick off its participation in the Asian Boxing U15 & U17 Championships 2026 starting in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. India is entering the age-group tournament with a strong squad in both boys’ and girls’ categories, showcasing the nation’s emphasis on grassroots development and nurturing young talents.
The U-17 teams will consist of 13 boxers each in boys’ and girls’ categories, competing in various weight divisions from 44–46kg to +80kg, supported by four coaches and a physiotherapist per team. On the other hand, the U-15 teams will have 15 boxers each in boys’ and girls’ divisions, competing in weight categories from 30–33kg to +70kg, with five coaches and a physiotherapist accompanying each team.
President of the Boxing Federation of India (BFI), Ajay Singh, highlighted the significance of these championships for young boxers, providing them with valuable international exposure and a chance to compete against the best in Asia. Singh praised the growth of boxing in India, noting the sport’s consistent success in major international events over the past two years, positioning it as the country’s top-performing sport.
The Asian Championships play a vital role in identifying and nurturing the next generation of elite boxers, with many young athletes expected to progress through the national pathway and represent India in future international competitions. In the previous edition held in Amman, Jordan, India wrapped up with an impressive performance, securing a total of 43 medals, including 15 gold, 6 silver, and 22 bronze medals, finishing second overall behind Kazakhstan.
