Chief selector Ajit Agarkar mentioned that the availability of senior players Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya for the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan will be determined based on the Indian team physio’s feedback. Both players are currently “on track,” but their fitness will be reassessed closer to the matches in Dharamshala, Lucknow, and Chennai on June 14, 17, and 20, respectively.
Pandya, dealing with back spasms, has missed several matches for the Mumbai Indians, while Rohit has been managing a right hamstring injury. Agarkar emphasized the importance of players being fit when representing the national team, highlighting the role of trainers and physios in providing crucial feedback on players’ fitness levels.
Agarkar also acknowledged the progress of seam-bowling all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, stating that the national selection panel is closely monitoring his development. Reddy’s improvement in both batting and bowling has been noted, with Agarkar emphasizing the significance of giving young players like Reddy exposure to enhance their skills and contribute to the team’s balance.
Regarding the challenge of selecting from a pool of talented players like Prince Yadav, Gurnoor Brar, and Harsh Dubey, who have been included in the ODI team for the first time, Agarkar expressed that having numerous options is a positive dilemma. He highlighted the importance of discussions among selectors, coaches, and captains to determine the best team balance across different formats, emphasizing that having a wide range of options is beneficial for the team’s performance.
