In a rapid maritime rescue operation, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Ship Sachet saved six lives when a fishing boat started flooding in rough seas near Mangaluru. The incident took place on Monday, with the fishing boat IFB Manju Matha suffering hull damage and beginning to flood in challenging sea conditions. Responding promptly, the ICG diverted a ship to assist, reaching the distressed vessel within 90 minutes.
The rescue operation faced adverse weather conditions including rough seas, strong winds, poor visibility, and approaching darkness, making the mission complex. Despite these challenges, the crew of ICGS Sachet demonstrated exceptional seamanship, precision, and coordination in executing the rescue operation efficiently. Utilizing advanced rescue technology, the ICG team deployed remotely operated lifebuoys designed for use in harsh sea conditions to safely rescue the stranded fishermen.
By 6:00 p.m., all six crew members were successfully rescued without any injuries. Following the rescue, ICGS Sachet is heading to New Mangalore for the safe disembarkation of the rescued crew and to complete further formalities. The operation underscores the Indian Coast Guard’s commitment to safeguarding lives at sea, showcasing the integration of modern technology with the courage and professionalism of Coast Guard personnel in handling challenging maritime emergencies.
On June 27, the ICG also responded effectively to a distress situation involving cargo vessel MV SITTHAA, which faced flooding in multiple compartments off the coast of Tiruchendur in Tamil Nadu. The Coast Guard swiftly dispatched ICG Ship Atulya to provide immediate assistance and prevent the situation from worsening. The coordinated efforts of the Coast Guard personnel and stakeholders ensured the safety of the vessel, crew, and marine environment.
