R Madhu Sudan, Charge d’Affaires at the Indian Embassy in Japan, emphasized India’s strategic strength and military superiority during a visit to the National Institute of Defence Studies (NIDS) in Tokyo. Operation Sindoor’s success and India’s firm stance against terrorism were discussed during the interaction. Sudan also touched upon cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region, aligning India’s Vision Mahasagar with Japan’s Free and Open Indo-Pacific approach.
During the visit to NIDS, Sudan engaged with senior officials from Japan’s Ministry of Defence (JMOD), Japan’s Self-Defence Forces (JSDF), and representatives from Friendly Foreign Countries. The discussion focused on India’s Strategic Outlook, India-Japan Relations, and the alignment of India’s MAHASAGAR with Japan’s vision of FOIP. The aim was to enhance security and economic collaboration between the two nations.
‘Operation Sindoor’ was launched by the Indian armed forces in response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in May 2025. This operation involved targeted military actions against terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Sudan also met with NIDS President Imakyurei Manabu to explore avenues for strengthening ties between India and Japan.
In another meeting, Sudan discussed enhancing India-Japan relations, particularly in defense exchanges and technology collaboration, with Mr. Imakyurei Manabu, President of the National Institute of Defence Studies of Japan. Additionally, Sudan delivered the Commemorative Address at India Day organized by the University of Electro-Communications (UEC) in Tokyo on May 8.
India and Japan recently deliberated on defense cooperation measures and future interactions across various sectors during the eighth India–Japan Army-to-Army Staff Talks from April 22-24. Both countries reiterated their commitment to a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific region. Furthermore, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and his Japanese counterpart Toshimitsu Motegi discussed West Asia developments, including international shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, during a telephonic conversation on April 10.
