Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Indonesia, Indian Ambassador Sandeep Chakravorty revealed that Indonesia is in advanced discussions regarding its interest in the BrahMos missile system. Chakravorty expressed optimism that these talks would soon lead to tangible outcomes, including the transfer of defense equipment from India to Indonesia.
Highlighting Indonesia’s abundant natural resources like nickel, coal, rare earths, gold, and copper, the Ambassador mentioned Indonesia’s strategy of downstreaming, emphasizing the need for processing ores before export. He indicated a potential for Indian investment to process these resources and supply them to India and the global market, with progress expected during the upcoming visit.
Discussing the historical and strategic ties between India and Indonesia, Chakravorty underscored the importance of leveraging their maritime neighbor status for mutual benefits. He noted the increasing intensity in bilateral relations in recent years, citing common colonial pasts and similar post-colonial development trajectories as foundations for cooperation across various sectors.
The Ambassador highlighted the multidimensional nature of the India-Indonesia relationship, encompassing areas such as defense, education, food security, trade, investment, and space. He pointed out significant collaborative efforts, including India’s commitment to assist in the restoration of Indonesia’s Prambanan Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site dedicated to Lord Shiva.
Emphasizing Prime Minister Modi’s global popularity, especially in Indonesia, the Ambassador anticipated a warm reception during Modi’s visit, with a large number of people eager to meet him. He mentioned a planned community event in Jakarta to showcase the local admiration and affection for PM Modi.
