Social media can impact an athlete’s routine, leading to extended distractions and affecting focus, recovery, and performance. Suraj Singh Aheibam, India U20 men’s goalkeeper, experienced this firsthand after a tough night following a football match loss. Realizing the negative impact of social media addiction on his routine, Suraj decided to make a change by deleting his accounts.
Suraj admitted to being a social media addict, spending hours doomscrolling daily. The excessive screen time left him exhausted and unable to concentrate during training sessions. To improve, he took a break from social media, focusing on better sleep, recovery, diet, and training organization. This shift in routine quickly reflected in his improved performance on the field.
The positive changes were evident within a month as Suraj’s disciplined approach paid off during the SAFF U19 Championship final. By saving a crucial penalty, he helped India secure victory, showcasing the benefits of his social media detox. Suraj emphasized the importance of staying away from distractions to maintain focus and calmness during critical moments.
After achieving success, Suraj reactivated his social media accounts but with a new mindset focused on balance and discipline. He adjusted his habits to include educational content and music, prioritizing personal growth over mindless scrolling. His transformation and maturity were recognized when he signed his first Indian Super League contract with Bengaluru FC.
Suraj’s journey highlights the impact of mentorship, with former India midfielder Renedy Singh playing a significant role in his development. The guidance received from mentors like Renedy has shaped Suraj’s mindset, emphasizing hard work and modern discipline. As he leads the India U20 team in the SAFF U20 Championship, Suraj aims to maintain his focus and discipline to achieve further success.
