Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi climbed back into the world’s top 10 rankings after securing a crucial win against Sweden’s Nils Grandelius at the TePe Sigeman & Co 2026 chess tournament. This victory not only marked Arjun’s first win in the event but also placed him in a tie for the lead with Magnus Carlsen, Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Yagiz Erdogmus, and Andy Woodward, all on two points after three rounds.
Arjun, who had faced challenges at the Masters earlier this year, started the tournament with solid draws against strong opponents, including Carlsen, before achieving a convincing victory over Grandelius. Playing with the white pieces, Arjun employed an aggressive strategy in response to Grandelius’ sharp Dragon Variation in an Open Sicilian setup.
By executing a direct kingside attack with opposite-side castling, Arjun steadily increased pressure and capitalized on his advantage to secure a full point, boosting his live rating to 2755.4 and reclaiming the 9th spot in the world rankings.
Turkish talent Yagiz Erdogmus continued his impressive performance by defeating China’s Zhu Jiner in another round of the tournament. Key matchups await in the fourth round, with Arjun set to face Abdusattorov in a crucial battle that could impact the leaderboard, while Carlsen will take on Van Foreest and Erdogmus will meet Grandelius.
With renewed momentum and confidence, Arjun aims to capitalize on his recent success for a strong finish in the tournament and further solidify his position among the world’s elite chess players.
