The High Commissioner of India to Kenya, Adarsh Swaika, recently met with Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry to discuss enhancing collaboration in climate action. The discussions centered on strengthening cooperation between India and Kenya in climate action, forestry, and environmental conservation. This included exploring synergies between Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiative “Plant in the Name of your Mother” and President Williams Ruto’s “15 Billion Trees Campaign.”
The meeting also involved talks on potential joint environmental activities and partnerships between forestry and environmental institutions of both countries. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier expressed the commitment to bolster the enduring partnership between India and Kenya, emphasizing shared aspirations of the Global South. This commitment was reiterated following his meeting with Kenyan President William Ruto at the Group of Seven (G7) Summit, where India participated as a partner country.
PM Modi highlighted the importance of the meeting with President William Ruto, affirming both nations’ dedication to collaborating for the welfare of their people. India and Kenya have a long-standing relationship rooted in deep historical and cultural connections dating back to the pre-independence era. The significant Indian diaspora in Kenya, numbering over 80,000, has played a vital role in shaping bilateral ties.
The two countries have a history of cooperation in various sectors such as trade, agriculture, education, defense, and healthcare. Kenya stands as a key partner for India in Africa, with bilateral trade exceeding USD 3 billion annually. India exports pharmaceuticals, machinery, and automobiles to Kenya while importing tea, coffee, and leather products.
