India’s High Commissioner to New Zealand, Muanpuii Saiawi, recently met with New Zealand MP Parmjeet Parmar to discuss strengthening bilateral ties, community welfare, and issues concerning the Indian diaspora in New Zealand. The High Commission of India in New Zealand shared that the meeting focused on enhancing India–New Zealand relations. Moreover, Saiawi had a meeting with New Zealand’s Foreign Minister Winston Peters on June 17, during which he presented Peters with an International Day of Yoga t-shirt.
During the meeting, Peters mentioned his visits to India in 2020, 2024, and 2025. He welcomed the new Indian High Commissioner to New Zealand, Muanpuii Saiawai, and expressed his well wishes for her term ahead. Additionally, New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on becoming India’s longest-serving PM on June 11.
Luxon appreciated the collaboration with Modi in delivering the New Zealand-India Free Trade Agreement and looked forward to further cooperation between the two countries. In response, PM Modi thanked Luxon for his warm wishes and highlighted the significance of the India-New Zealand FTA in advancing their partnership. India and New Zealand share warm and friendly ties, with diplomatic relations established in 1952. Both countries share commonalities such as Commonwealth membership, common law practices, and a commitment to economic development and prosperity through democratic governance systems.
On April 27, India and New Zealand finalized a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA), seen as a transformative step that opens new opportunities for trade, investment, and strategic cooperation amidst evolving global economic dynamics.
