Indian mangoes are becoming increasingly popular in the wider US Pacific Northwest, including Seattle, thanks to a year-long effort involving retailers, distributors, and consumers. A segment on Fox 13 News ‘Good Day Seattle’ recently highlighted the arrival of various mango varieties in the region, drawing attention to the significance of Indian mangoes. India’s Consul General in Seattle, Prakash Gupta, emphasized the cultural importance of mangoes to Indian people, noting how they symbolize the start of the summer season and hold cherished memories for families.
Gupta mentioned the historical significance of Indian mangoes in the US, recalling how former President George W. Bush’s positive experience with an Alphonso mango during his visit to India in 2006 sparked a trend of mango imports into the country. Last year, the Indian Consulate in Seattle organized a mango-tasting event featuring four Indian mango varieties to gauge local interest. This initiative expanded to include grocery stores, delivery services, and major retailers to assess consumer demand in the Seattle market.
After a year of dedicated efforts, Indian mangoes are set to be available in Indian grocery stores and Costco outlets across Seattle, Kirkland, and Redmond starting this weekend. The Consul General expressed his delight at the successful culmination of these endeavors, bringing a variety of Indian mangoes to Seattle residents to enjoy.
