Indian Naval ship INS Sunayna, part of the Indian Ocean Ship (IOS) SAGAR initiative, has left Bangladesh’s Chattogram after a productive port visit characterized by professional interactions, maritime cooperation, and cultural exchanges with the Bangladesh Navy. The ship set sail from Chattogram on May 10 after a ceremonial farewell by the Bangladesh Navy and is now en route to Sri Lanka. The Commanding Officer of IOS Sagar engaged with senior officials of the Bangladesh Navy during the visit, aiming to bolster bilateral maritime cooperation and regional maritime goals.
During the visit, various activities were conducted, including a deck reception onboard the ship that brought together high-ranking Bangladeshi Navy officials. The crew of IOS Sagar also participated in a reception hosted by the Bangladesh Navy. Professional engagements involved cross-deck visits and sharing of best practices between the personnel of both navies. Additionally, the crew visited the Bangladesh Naval Academy, interacting with officer cadets and faculty members, while friendly sports activities and cultural exchanges further strengthened mutual understanding and camaraderie between the two navies.
As part of its departure from Chattogram, IOS Sagar engaged in a Passage Exercise (PASSEX) with Bangladesh’s naval vessel BNS Protoy, along with other navy air assets. The exercise focused on coordinated maritime drills and advanced surface maneuvers to enhance interoperability and operational cooperation between the two navies. The visit and PASSEX highlighted the joint commitment of India and Bangladesh to ensuring peace, stability, and security in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). With personnel from 16 partner nations on board, IOS Sagar continues its operational deployment in the region, with its next stop planned at Colombo, Sri Lanka.
The Indian Naval ship arrived at Chattogram harbor on May 8 after a successful transit through the Bay of Bengal. The presence of IOS Sagar in Chattogram reflects India’s Neighbourhood First policy and the MAHASAGAR initiative, showcasing a mutual dedication to a secure and stable Indian Ocean Region, as stated by the Indian High Commission in Bangladesh.
