The Indian Navy and Royal Malaysian Navy recently concluded their 11th Staff Talks in New Delhi, focusing on enhancing maritime cooperation and maritime security in the Indian Ocean Region. Co-chaired by senior officials from both navies, the discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral engagements and collaborative pursuits. In a recent engagement, Indian Navy’s research vessel, INS Sagardhwani, visited Malaysia’s Port Klang, fostering professional and scientific interactions between the two navies.
During the port call, personnel from both navies exchanged insights on modern hydrographic practices, marine environmental research, and oceanographic technologies. The visit also included a Subject Matter Expert Exchange (SMEE) focusing on data-centric maintenance approaches and navigation safety tools. The Commanding Officer of INS Sagardhwani met with the High Commissioner of India to Malaysia to discuss the vessel’s oceanographic mission and scientific cooperation.
The deepening maritime relationship between India and Malaysia was highlighted during the deployment, emphasizing the shared commitment of both navies towards regional engagement and professional ties. The defense ties between the two countries have strengthened over the years, with the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Defence Cooperation signed in 1993 serving as a cornerstone. This MoU allows for expanding bilateral cooperation in various areas, including joint ventures, joint development projects, and training initiatives.
