Even as the Indian Navy welcomed its sixth advanced stealth frigate, concerns arise over its goal to increase the fleet to 200 warships by 2035. The Navy’s bid to acquire eight Next Generation Corvettes (NGCs) under Project 28A is facing delays pending approval from the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS). Some question the necessity of these missile corvettes alongside the new frigates.
With China aiding Pakistan in constructing advanced attack submarines, emphasis on anti-submarine warfare platforms grows. The Navy currently operates anti-submarine warfare corvettes and is set to receive smaller crafts for coastal defense. Calls for additional large anti-submarine warfare platforms capable of deep-sea operations are being voiced to counter increasing submarine activities in the region.
Amidst ongoing developments, the Navy’s procurement plans include Next-Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPVs) and Next-Generation Destroyers (NGDs). Additionally, the Navy aims to initiate deliveries of AIP-equipped conventional submarines under Project 75 (I) by 3033. Projects like Project-17 Bravo (P-17B) Frigates and Landing Platform Docks are also part of the Navy’s future endeavors.
