When Manav Shah tees off at Shinnecock Hills for the U.S. Open, it signifies a long-awaited dream come true. His participation not only marks a personal milestone but also symbolizes the aspirations of a rising generation of Indian-origin golfers. Shah, with roots in Gujarat and raised in California, joins a select group of Indian-origin golfers at this prestigious event, including Aaron Rai, Akshay Bhatia, Sahith Theegala, and Sudarshan Yellamaraju.

For Shah, the journey to this point has been unconventional. Born to Indian immigrant parents, he defied the traditional career path of medicine favored by his family. Despite starting as a pre-med student at UCLA, Shah’s passion for golf led him to pursue a degree in Political Science and International Relations. Fluent in multiple languages, he transitioned to professional golf after a successful collegiate career.

Shah’s professional golf career has taken him through various tours, showcasing his persistence and talent in a highly competitive sport. His breakthrough victory at the PGA Tour Latinoamérica event in 2022 was a turning point, reinforcing his belief in competing at the highest level. This triumph paved the way for his participation in the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills.

Representing his Indian heritage has been crucial for Shah, who maintained strong ties with his roots despite growing up in the U.S. Regular visits to India and involvement with the Asian Tour and Indian Golf Premier League have deepened his connection to his cultural identity. His qualification for the U.S. Open through a rigorous qualifying process is not just a personal achievement but also a significant milestone for the Indian Golf Premier League.

Shah’s journey from humble beginnings on public golf courses in California to the grand stage of the U.S. Open is a testament to his perseverance, identity, and ambition. Regardless of the outcome at the tournament, Shah’s story inspires Indian and Indian-origin golfers to believe in their potential to reach the Majors.
