Indian-origin golfers Aaron Rai, Akshay Bhatia, and Sudarshan Yellamaraju remained in contention after the challenging opening round at the Memorial Tournament, one of the PGA Tour’s premier events. They all posted 1-over 73 rounds to share 33rd place, while Sahith Theegala opened with a 2-over 74 and was tied for 44th.

Tommy Fleetwood, Wyndham Clark, J.J. Spaun, and Ryan Gerard set the early pace at 5-under 67, leading the tournament. Among Indian golf followers, much attention was on Aaron Rai, who returned to competition after his PGA Championship win, aiming to build on his success.

Akshay Bhatia showed promise with early birdies but slipped back to 1-over after a double bogey on the final hole. Sudarshan Yellamaraju, a surprise entrant, made a solid start despite an uncertain beginning, finishing with a 73. Theegala faced challenges but remained in contention for the second day.

The demanding course saw mixed performances, with defending champion Scottie Scheffler struggling to a 73. Fleetwood’s flawless round of 67 stood out, while other leaders like Clark, Spaun, and Gerard showcased strong performances with multiple birdies.

Rory McIlroy, a six-time major champion, finished tied 13th with a 1-under 71. With tight competition and tough scoring, the Indian-origin players are well-placed as the Memorial Tournament progresses.
