Indian badminton players PV Sindhu and the men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty had a successful start at the Singapore Open. Sindhu defeated Indonesia’s Putri Kusuma Wardani in women’s singles, while Satwik-Chirag overcame Chen Zhi Yi and Presley Smith in men’s doubles.
Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist, secured a victory in straight games, leveling her head-to-head record with her Indonesian opponent. She will now face Japan’s Riko Gunji in the pre-quarterfinals. On the other hand, Satwik-Chirag, ranked fourth globally, fought back after losing the opening game to emerge victorious in the men’s doubles match.
In men’s singles, Ayush Shetty displayed a strong performance in the opening game but eventually lost to Victor Lai. Despite some losses by other Indian players on day 1, Sindhu and Satwik-Chirag’s wins were notable highlights of the tournament.
