Indian High Commissioner to Seychelles, Rohit Rathish, described Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming three-day state visit to Seychelles as a significant event that will enhance the bilateral partnership and open up new opportunities. Rathish highlighted the excellent and dynamic relationship between India and Seychelles, emphasizing the positive momentum under PM Modi’s leadership.
During his visit from June 27 to 29, PM Modi will be a guest of honor at Seychelles’ 50th independence anniversary celebrations. This visit marks a historic milestone for Seychelles, coinciding with 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The ties between India and Seychelles are deeply rooted in shared values of democracy, cultural affinities, and a long history dating back 250 years.
PM Modi’s agenda in Seychelles includes addressing the National Assembly, engaging with the Indian diaspora, and holding discussions with President Herminie to strengthen cooperation across various sectors. The visit aims to bolster partnerships in defense, security, health, education, infrastructure, and explore new avenues such as AI, cyber security, and marine science.
Rathish praised the Indian diaspora in Seychelles for their role as a “living bridge” between the two nations, contributing to the socio-economic development and fostering cultural ties. The diaspora eagerly anticipates PM Modi’s visit and looks forward to enhancing people-to-people connections, cultural exchanges, and business collaborations with the support of the Indian government.
Diplomatic relations between India and Seychelles were established post Seychelles’ independence in 1976, with a strong historical foundation of mutual cooperation. The visit of INS Nilgiri during Seychelles’ Independence Day celebrations in 1976 symbolized the beginning of a lasting partnership, further solidified by the establishment of diplomatic missions in the late 1970s and early 2000s.
