The Indian Railways has given the green light to two projects totaling Rs 409 crore. One project involves building a 4.59 km rail flyover in the Rourkela-Bondamunda section at a cost of Rs 135 crore. This initiative aims to ease congestion in the industrial corridor due to rising freight traffic from mining and steel production activities.
The Rourkela-Bondamunda section is predicted to see a surge in freight movement with expansions in mining complexes and steel production. To address this, a new rail flyover is sanctioned to enhance train movement efficiency and reduce conflicts between passenger and freight services. This project is expected to handle an additional 8 million tonnes per annum of freight traffic upon completion.
The second project focuses on upgrading relay-based interlocking to advanced electronic interlocking at 20 locations in the Malda Division of Eastern Railway, with an investment of Rs 274 crore. This modernization effort will replace outdated signalling systems with advanced technology, enhancing operational reliability and efficiency. The move is set to bolster train safety, operational efficiency, and pave the way for future technological advancements in signalling systems.
