The Indian Railways has allocated Rs 206 crore for implementing the Kavach Version 4.0 safety system on 680 route kilometers in the Rewari-Delhi and Shakurbasti-Bathinda sections of the Northern Railway’s Delhi Division. This initiative is part of the nationwide rollout of Kavach, an indigenous safety system aimed at enhancing safety on crucial routes. Kavach, an Automatic Train Protection system developed in India, focuses on preventing Signal Passed at Danger incidents and train collisions.
The deployment of Kavach Version 4.0 on these key routes is expected to bolster safety measures, enhance operational efficiency, improve the reliability of train operations, and facilitate faster and technology-driven movement of both passenger and freight services. The system, by continuously monitoring train movements and automatically applying brakes when necessary, ensures safe operations at maximum permissible speeds and supports reliable train services even in adverse weather conditions like dense fog.
In another development, the Railways has sanctioned a project worth Rs 175 crore to establish additional homing facilities for 250 three-phase electric locomotives at the High Horse Power Diesel Shed in Raipur under the South East Central Railway. Homing involves assigning locomotives to designated sheds for primary maintenance, safety inspections, repairs, and overall upkeep to ensure efficient and safe operations. This project aligns with Indian Railways’ efforts to enhance maintenance infrastructure in response to the growing electric locomotive fleet and increasing freight and passenger operations across the network.
The additional homing facilities at the Raipur depot will not only optimize existing infrastructure usage but also create space for future technological advancements, supporting the Railways in meeting the evolving demands of the locomotive fleet.
