Indian Railways has unveiled the design of India’s inaugural bullet train, set to run on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor. The Ministry of Railways displayed an image of the proposed bullet train at its New Delhi office, stating that it has been installed at Gate Number 4. The 508-km MAHSR corridor, as announced by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in February, will traverse Maharashtra, Gujarat, and the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.
The MAHSR corridor is planned to encompass 12 stations, including Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Billimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Ahmedabad, and Sabarmati. Progress updates reveal that foundation work has been finished at eight stations in Gujarat, with ongoing construction at Thane, Virar, and Boisar in Maharashtra. Notably, significant advancements have been made in bridge infrastructure, with completion of 17 river bridges and ongoing work on four major bridges in Gujarat and four additional river bridges in Maharashtra.
Under the government’s Make in India initiative, the MAHSR project is being developed, with train sets capable of reaching a design speed of 280 kmph jointly produced by Integral Coach Factory in Chennai and BEML Limited in Bengaluru. Railway Minister Vaishnaw confirmed the acquisition of the entire 1,389.5 hectares of land required for the project, ensuring compliance with relevant laws and providing compensation to affected families in accordance with state laws and the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act.
