Indian Railways provided a subsidy of Rs 60,239 crore on passenger tickets in 2024-25, equating to a 43% average concession per traveler. This subsidy extends to all passengers, with additional concessions for various categories such as persons with disabilities, patients, and students. Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that ticket fares are not considered a confidential matter and are publicly available information.

To ensure transparency, details of passenger fares, including base fare, reservation charge, superfast charge, and GST, are prominently displayed on tickets and digital platforms. The minister emphasized that fare determination considers service costs, competition from other transport modes, and affordability. The fare structure of the Vande Bharat Sleeper train, for instance, is based on a per passenger-per-kilometer rate.

Vaishnaw mentioned that Indian Railways continuously enhances passenger facilities, particularly for senior citizens and persons with disabilities. Measures include automatic allotment of lower berths to specific passenger categories and earmarking lower berths in different coach classes. The Vande Bharat Sleeper train, known for its all-inclusive fare, ensures accessibility to passengers, even those on waiting lists due to ticket cancellations.
