Indian Railways is set to produce 260 rakes of Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets for regular passenger service, as per Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw’s announcement to Parliament. The manufacturing program, led by BEML & Integral Coach Factory, Chennai, and technology partners, involves phased development, trials, and series production. The focus is on integrating technological advancements, strategic planning, and manufacturing to ensure safe and comfortable travel for passengers.
The Vande Bharat Sleeper coaches are equipped with modern features such as semi-permanent couplers, anti-climbers with KAVACH, and an operating speed of 160 KMPH for enhanced safety and comfort. Safety measures include fire barrier doors, aerosol-based fire detection systems, regenerative braking for energy efficiency, and UV-C lamp-based air disinfection. Additionally, the coaches will have centrally controlled plug doors, wider gangways, ergonomically designed ladders, CCTVs, and emergency communication units for passenger convenience and safety.
