Indian Restaurant in Scotland Faces Legal Battle Over Name

What began as a unique name for an Indian restaurant in Scotland led to a legal dispute over race, identity, and cultural significance for Alok Singh, a restaurateur and senior member of the Scottish National Party. Despite being known as Firangi, a well-known Indian restaurant in Scotland, the name faced a challenge due to potential racial connotations associated with it. Anil, the owner, received a court notice indicating that the name might need to be changed.

Anil explained that the term “Firangi” was perceived as potentially offensive towards white individuals by authorities. This issue escalated to a legal battle where the restaurant’s branding was questioned. However, a breakthrough occurred when a simple tagline was introduced. By adding “Yet Indian By Nature” below the restaurant’s name, which was already trademarked, the establishment clarified its cultural identity and received legal protection. This move helped establish that “Firangi” was intended as a cultural and historical reference rather than a derogatory term.

Reflecting on the incident, Anil emphasized the varying interpretations of words across different cultures. While in India, “Firangi” has historically referred to foreigners without negative connotations, in Scotland, it was perceived differently. Apart from his culinary ventures, Anil is actively involved in Scottish politics, holding a significant position within the SNP’s Renfrew branch. He expressed gratitude towards the party for its unwavering support during challenging times.

Anil sees a promising future for businesses like his, attributing it to the growing Indian diaspora in Scotland and the strengthening ties between India and Scotland. He acknowledged the Consulate General of India for their support and mentioned his pride in hosting Indian sports icons and other distinguished guests at his restaurant. Anil also highlighted the importance of recognizing Indian athletes as true heroes and expressed his aspiration to run for a councillor position in the upcoming elections.
