The family of an Indian seafarer who passed away in Venezuela alleges that crucial organs, such as the brain, heart, and lungs, were absent when his body was brought back to India. The Federation of Seafarers’ Unions of India is urging a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. The seafarer, Rakesh Chauhan, from Uttar Pradesh, underwent a re-autopsy in India after his remains were repatriated from Venezuela.
Allegations arose after the re-examination revealed the absence of vital organs, sparking concerns about the handling of his body and the cause of death. The Federation of Seafarers’ Unions of India highlighted the lack of transparency in the repatriation process and the need for accountability from Venezuelan authorities. Chauhan’s body was returned to his hometown without any official explanation from Venezuelan authorities regarding the cause of death.
The family demanded a re-autopsy, which unveiled the shocking revelation that none of Chauhan’s organs were present in his body. The organization emphasized the need for a comprehensive investigation into the case, expressing dismay over the lack of transparency and proper documentation. The condition in which the body was returned has raised serious concerns about the treatment of Indian seafarers abroad and the responsibilities of foreign authorities in such situations.
According to reports, Chauhan, a crew member on a merchant navy vessel, traveled to Venezuela in November 2025. His family was initially informed of his injuries and subsequent death by the shipping company. However, discrepancies in the information provided by the company and the delayed repatriation of his body have fueled suspicions and demands for justice.
