India’s HS Prannoy surprised World No. 5 Jonatan Christie of Indonesia, winning 10-21, 21-12, 21-18 in a thrilling men’s singles match at the Singapore Open. Prannoy’s strong comeback after losing the first game showcased his determination, outplaying Christie in the subsequent games.
Lakshya Sen also secured a victory, defeating China’s Lu Guang Zu 21-17, 21-15 in the men’s singles category. Additionally, the mixed doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto advanced to the next round after a hard-fought 21-14, 20-22, 21-13 win over Malaysia’s Wong Tien Ci and Lim Chiew Sien.
Prannoy’s next challenge will be against Singapore’s Loh Kean Yew in the Round of 16. Meanwhile, Lakshya Sen is set to face Kunlavut Vitidsarn in the pre-quarterfinals, following his win over Lu Guang Zu.
In the mixed doubles event, Dhruv and Tanisha showed resilience, securing a 21-13 victory in the final game after a tough battle against their Malaysian opponents. The Indian pair’s strong performance earned them a spot in the next round.
Women’s singles player Malvika Bansod fought hard but was defeated by Lin Hsiang Ti 21-11, 19-21, 12-21. Additionally, Rutaparna Panda and Swetaparna Panda faced defeat in the Women’s doubles category.
Earlier, on Tuesday, PV Sindhu and the men’s doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty started their Singapore Open campaign successfully. Sindhu won against Indonesia’s Putri Kusuma Wardani, while Satwik-Chirag secured a victory over Chen Zhi Yi and Presley Smith in men’s doubles.
