Indian near-space startup Red Balloon Aerospace has teamed up with Armenia’s Bazoomq Space Research Laboratory to collaborate on developing high-altitude balloon technologies, near-space testing capabilities, and AI-powered payload systems. The partnership, as per Orbital Today’s analysis, aims to enhance stratospheric research and commercial applications through joint demonstration campaigns utilizing high-altitude balloon platforms.
Under the memorandum of understanding (MoU), Red Balloon Aerospace and Bazoomq will conduct integration and testing of experimental payloads in the stratosphere, subjecting onboard computing systems to near-space conditions above commercial aviation altitudes but below Earth’s orbit.
A significant focus of the collaboration will be on creating artificial intelligence-enabled onboard systems that can process data in real time, oversee payload operations, and facilitate semi-autonomous missions with minimal ground involvement.
The partners will also work together on technologies concerning stability and pointing systems, communication relay concepts, sensing payloads, and advanced data-processing workflows.
The agreement with Bazoomq follows Red Balloon Aerospace’s recent Mission SANA flight on May 27, 2026, where the company launched VISTA, described as India’s first indigenous stratospheric super-pressure balloon platform capable of carrying commercial payloads.
Armenia’s Bazoomq Space Research Laboratory has previously engaged in stratospheric projects in partnership with the AYAS Aerospace Society, viewing near-space systems as a crucial link between terrestrial infrastructure, aviation, and satellite-based services.
The collaboration is not only focused on research and development but also on exploring opportunities in government programs, grant-funded projects, and customer-driven prototypes.
High-altitude platform systems are gaining global attention as a flexible and cost-effective alternative to satellites.
