India’s women’s singles players excelled at the Australian Badminton Open 2026, as PV Sindhu and Tanvi Sharma secured spots in the second round with impressive wins. Sindhu, a former world champion, swiftly defeated Peru’s Inés Castillo in straight games, dominating the match for a 21-13, 21-11 victory.
In another match, Tanvi Sharma, aged 17, delivered a remarkable performance by beating Chiu Pin-Chian of Chinese Taipei in straight games with a score of 21-12, 22-20. This win was a significant achievement for Tanvi, who has faced challenges on the Badminton World Federation (BWF) circuit this season.
Tanvi’s victory sets up a face-off with Malvika Bansod in the next round, after Malvika overcame Thailand’s Tonrug Saeheng. Despite the success of India’s women’s singles players, the men’s contingent faced early exits, with Kiran George, Saneeth Dayanand, and Tharun Mannepalli falling short in their matches.
India’s representation in the women’s singles draw expanded further, with Tanya Hemanth securing a win against USA’s Ishika Jaiswal. However, Aakarshi Kashyap’s campaign concluded with a narrow defeat against Malaysia’s Wong Ling Ching. With multiple Indian players progressing, India remains a strong contender in the women’s singles competition.
