As the Indian Women’s Hockey Team readies for the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 Qualifiers in Hyderabad, Telangana, midfielder Baljeet Kaur, aged 24, is eager to contribute towards India’s qualification for the World Cup. Baljeet expressed the team’s ambition to perform well and secure a medal for the country.
Baljeet highlighted the team’s promising composition, emphasizing the presence of young and agile players that create a strong synergy within the group. She praised the team’s fitness levels and overall cohesion, indicating a positive outlook for the upcoming tournament.
Reflecting on the training camp’s effectiveness, Baljeet commended the rigorous preparations undertaken, focusing on various aspects including shooting techniques. She shared her personal emphasis on enhancing fitness levels during the training period in preparation for the qualifiers.
Baljeet’s hockey journey commenced over a decade ago in her village Kaka Kandiala, Punjab, during her seventh-grade years. Encouraged by a relative who played hockey, Baljeet’s interest quickly transformed into a deep passion for the sport. She recalled the humble beginnings that ignited her love for hockey.
Transitioning to a school in Tarn Taran for better training opportunities, Baljeet’s dedication led to her selection for the Junior National Camp in 2017, marking a significant milestone in her career progression. Despite facing initial challenges due to financial constraints, Baljeet expressed gratitude for the community’s support in providing necessary equipment.
Debuting in the senior Indian team in 2022, Baljeet acknowledged the journey’s fluctuations, aiming to maintain consistency and continue representing India. Known for her aggressive playing style and speed on the field, Baljeet attributed these traits to her innate personality since childhood.
Despite encountering skepticism, particularly regarding prioritizing studies over sports, Baljeet remained steadfast in her pursuit of a hockey career, supported by her family’s unwavering encouragement. India is set to kick off their FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 Qualifiers in Hyderabad, facing Uruguay on March 8, followed by matches against Scotland and Wales.
