Experienced wrestler Deepak Punia showcased his skill at the selection trials for the 2026 Asian Games in Lucknow. The Wrestling Federation of India confirmed a strong men’s squad, including Sujeet Kalkal, Aman Sehrawat, and Sunil Kumar, who will lead the Greco-Roman unit.
Among the 169 wrestlers competing, Aman Sehrawat secured a victory in the 57kg final, while Sujeet Kalkal triumphed in the 65kg category. Deepak Punia, known for his Asian Games silver, claimed the 97kg spot. The trials highlighted the intense competition across weight classes for a place in the Indian team.
President Sanjay Singh praised the blend of experienced wrestlers and emerging talent in the squad. He expressed confidence in the team’s preparation for the Asian Games, emphasizing the nation’s pride and the wrestlers’ determination to excel on the continental stage. The Greco-Roman events saw Sunil Kumar and others securing their spots with impressive performances.
The selected wrestlers will now enter a rigorous national camp to refine their strategies for the Asian Games. The Indian contingent aims to enhance the country’s wrestling legacy at the continental event, striving to surpass previous medal records and make history on the Asian stage.
