India’s Ambassador to Panama, Sumit Seth, participated in the inauguration of the 56th Organization of American States (OAS) General Assembly in Panama. He praised Panama President Jose Raul Mulino for his leadership and extended best wishes for the event’s success.
The 56th OAS General Assembly is taking place in Panama City from June 22-24, marking Panama’s third time hosting the event after 1996 and 2007. India, a Permanent Observer to the Organization of American States, was represented by Ambassador Sumit Seth at the assembly’s opening.
The theme of the 56th General Assembly is “The Americas United on the Bicentennial of the Amphictyonic Congress of Panama,” focusing on “Firm Multilateralism in Defence of Democracy, Hemispheric Security, and Stability in the Member States.” The Assembly, comprising delegations from all member states led by Ministers of Foreign Affairs, holds decision-making authority through majority votes.
The OAS General Assembly plays a crucial role in setting policies and mandates for the OAS and its organs, as well as electing members of decentralised bodies like the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. Resolutions are typically adopted through consensus, with each member state having one vote.
